Cultured Stone and Silicone Molds

Cultured stone is an indispensable building material, and many different colors and shapes of cultured stone are available on the market. We all know that natural resources are limited, and pure natural materials are expensive, so cultured stone also comes in both natural and synthetic forms. The two differ significantly in price and manufacturing process. Pure natural cultured stone is produced through steps such as mining, polishing, and hammering, and synthetic cultured stone is similarly simple to create. Synthetic cultured stone, also known as artificial cultured stone, can be made using silicone molds.

How are silicone molds for artificial cultured stone made, and what should be considered when making them?

Artificial cultured stone has a simple structure and texture, allowing for the creation of silicone molds using a casting method. Before making silicone molds for artificial cultured stone, liquid mold silicone should be selected. It is best to choose a mold silicone with a hardness of 25-40. The silicone should also possess properties such as non-whitening and easy coloring to meet the requirements for making silicone molds. The following is a brief description of the steps for making a silicone mold for artificial cultured stone:

  1. Prepare tools and materials: silicone for artificial cultured stone molds, electronic scale, container, mixing knife, scissors, cardboard/wooden board, hot melt glue, cultured stone mold base, etc.

  2. Set the mold frame size according to the number and arrangement of the cultured stone molds. The height of the mold frame must be at least twice the height of the tallest cultured stone. Fix the surrounding wooden board with hot melt glue, ensuring a distance of at least 2cm between the wooden board and the mold base.

  3. Clean the cultured stones and arrange them orderly in the prepared mold frame, securing their positions with glue.

  4. Evenly spray a release agent onto the mold frame and the cultured stone mold base.

  5. Mix the silicone and hardener in a 100:2 ratio using an electronic scale.

  6. After mixing, stir thoroughly and place the mixture in a vacuum pump to remove air bubbles. The vacuum is complete when the pressure gauge reads -0.1 MPa.

  7. After vacuuming, slowly pour the silicone into the mold frame, ensuring it submerges the top of the cultured stone by 2cm or more.

  8. Allow the silicone to stand still, allowing it to naturally cure.

  9. Once the liquid silicone has cured, demold the stone. After demolding, trim the silicone mold. It is recommended to let newly made silicone molds sit for 24 hours before use.

Making silicone molds for artificial cultured stone is simple. After each batch of cultured stone production, clean the silicone mold thoroughly and lay it flat in a cool, shaded place. Do not fold it. For questions regarding the operation, selection, or customization of silicone molds for artificial cultured stone, please contact HANAST Silicone.
