Cultured stone factories often face a choice between RTV2 silicone and polyurethane rubber when selecting mold materials. Both have their advantages, but silicone offers significant strengths in decorative stone and wall tile production.

Detail Replication Capability

RTV2 silicone has a lower viscosity before curing, allowing it to naturally flow into the finest surface textures of natural stone master molds. Polyurethane rubber, with its higher viscosity, often requires vacuum degassing and pressure casting to achieve a similar level of detail. For factories replicating fine stone textures, silicone consistently provides better surface fidelity.

Release Performance

Silicone is non-sticky, requiring almost no release agent when casting concrete and plaster. Polyurethane molds, however, require regular application of release agents, increasing labor costs and potentially affecting the surface finish of the cast stone.

Chemical Resistance

Silicone exhibits far superior resistance to the alkaline environment of wet concrete compared to polyurethane. During long-term use, polyurethane molds swell and age due to the alkalinity of cement, while silicone molds maintain dimensional stability. In concrete pouring applications, silicone molds typically have a lifespan 2–3 times that of polyurethane.

Heat Resistance

RTV2 silicone can withstand temperatures up to 250°C, while polyurethane typically begins to degrade above 100–120°C. For plants using heated curing chambers to accelerate concrete or plaster curing, silicone is a safer choice.

Cost Considerations

Polyurethane rubber has a lower initial purchase price, but silicone's longer mold life and lower maintenance requirements result in a lower per-piece casting cost. For plants with high-volume production, RTV2 silicone is a more economical long-term option.
