The durability of silicone grease - its ability to keep performing for years under heat, cold and vibration - is what separates premium thermal paste from cheap alternatives. A grease that works well on day one but dries out after one year will return as a warranty cost. This article explains how to determine thermal grease durability with practical test methods and acceptance criteria.
Durability is the maintenance of thermal performance over the product lifetime. A durable grease keeps its thermal impedance low, stays soft, does not bleed excessive oil and does not pump out from the interface. Durability is not listed on most data sheets, so buyers must evaluate it through testing.
Apply a controlled grease layer between aluminum plates or on test coupons and age them in an air-circulating oven at the rated temperature (for example, 125°C or 150°C). Measure thermal impedance and weight loss at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 hours. A durable grease should show less than 20% impedance increase and minimal weight loss over 1000 hours.
Place a known weight of grease on filter paper inside a covered dish and hold it at elevated temperature for 24-72 hours. Measure the oil ring diameter or the weight of separated oil. Low-bleed grades show only a small ring; high-bleed grease stains PCBs and can cause contamination in optical or high-voltage assemblies.
Assemble two aluminum plates with grease, then cycle between -40°C and +125°C for 500-1000 cycles. Periodically measure the thermal impedance and inspect the edge for squeezed-out grease. Pump-out appears as grease expelled around the perimeter and rising impedance. This test simulates real operating conditions for automotive and outdoor electronics.
For automotive, EV and industrial products, mount the greased assembly on a vibration shaker (for example, 10-500 Hz, 2-5 g) for 24-100 hours and re-measure thermal performance. Soft non-curing grease can migrate under sustained vibration, so high-viscosity or curing grades may be required.
Apply grease to polished aluminum, copper and silver-plated coupons and store them at 60°C and 90% relative humidity for 500 hours. Check for pitting, discoloration or oxide growth. Also verify compatibility with the substrate materials used in your assembly, including anodized aluminum and nickel-plated copper.

With correct selection, a quality silicone grease lasts 5-10 years at typical electronics temperatures below 100°C, and 2-5 years at 120-150°C.
