How to solve the problem of liquid silicone being too hard after solidification

2025-03-26

Many first-time users of liquid silicone often purchase silicone that is not suitable for their products due to uncertainty about the specific hardness required. The hardness of liquid silicone has an interval value, which can be adjusted according to the needs. The softness and hardness of silicone determine its use. So, how to solve the problem of liquid silicone being too hard after solidification? Below, Hongtu Silicone will share two feasible methods to solve the problem of silicone being too hard.
The first method:
By adding silicone oil to reduce the hardness of silicone gel, for example: generally adding 1% silicone oil will reduce the hardness of silicone gel by about 0.9-1.1 degrees; Adding 10% silicone oil will reduce the hardness of the silicone by about 5 degrees. However, in practical operation, if the proportion of added silicone oil is too high, it will damage the molecular weight of the silicone gel, and the tear resistance and tensile strength will correspondingly decrease, thereby affecting the service life of the silicone mold. In addition, adding too much silicone oil can also cause the silicone rubber mold to deform easily. So, we suggest that the ratio of silicone to silicone oil should generally not exceed 5%, and try to add silicone oil with higher viscosity. If more than 5% of silicone oil is added, please try a small amount first to determine whether the mold can be used.
The second method:
Using a mixture of high hardness silicone and low hardness silicone (provided that you have purchased two types of silicone), for example, the hardness of the silicone after mixing 20 hardness silicone and 10 hardness silicone is around 15 Shore A. When using this mixing method, it should be noted that condensation type cannot be mixed with addition type, otherwise it will cause non curing phenomenon.
In summary, to avoid unnecessary trouble, samples should be tested before use, and only after all performance tests are qualified can mass production be carried out. HANAST Silicone has been focusing on liquid silicone for many years, with high-quality silicone that has been unanimously recognized by customers.
